Notes from Exile: Letters
Log/Verse: daily reflections from prison, written every morning at my bunk. Part poem, part log book.
In the early days of incarceration, letters become a lifeline. This verse reflects the arc of that experience.
LETTERS
Plentiful in the beginning.
Surprises—both good and bad.
I never thought that one.
How come nothing from this one?
I really thought.
I didn’t think.
Did I answer that one?
Should I answer this one?
Doesn’t matter.
Eventually they trickle in—
and finally,
they stop.
And I thought
I wouldn’t care.
